====== Deep night: an alluring way of looking at time after midnight ====== In Japan, TV broadcast times are referred to, when talking about late night broadcasts, in "deep night" terminology, like 24:00 instead of 0:00. In other words, on May 12th at 24:00 means "midnight on the day of the 12th going to the 13th" to avoid ambiguity. If it was 0:00, there would be slight ambiguity as to when the time was. But deep night actually usually extends until 5:00. So, 25:00 is 1am, 26:00 is 2am, 27:00 is 3am, 28:00 is 4am, and then at 5am, we're back to 05:00. I find this system for referring to time just generally superior to starting at 0:00 each night. Not only does this resolve ambiguity in communication, but it's also a great mental reference frame. I almost never go to bed before midnight -- I go to bed after. But for me, the day doesn't end until I sleep. So deep night provides a useful way of referring to these hours that I'm still awake. It's all "part of the same day" for me. For reference, I usually go to bed at 27:00. Isn't that clear?
