====== particle17? ======

particle 17 was a "blog" / static hugo site that I was running from approximately September 15, 2019 to approximately July 31, 2022. The primary reason why I shut down the service was that a lot of my writing was essentially too timely and most of the site had aged out of relevance. For example, I talked about a lot of defects with AT&T Fiber, which had since been fixed in subsequent firmware versions. I reviewed the AmpliFi Alien, a wireless gateway/router/firewall, which is now basically not an ideal thing to use anymore.

Torn between ripping out old pages, adding a giant warning block saying they were out of date, or adding new site content, I basically gave up.

There were also a number of latent issues I had:
  * CSS issues that I didn't want to diagnose/figure out
    * In-particular, the table-of-contents support was kind of missing features I wanted, and I found myself adjusting markdown simply to fix rendering problems.
  * Dark/light mode contrast issues (the site just generally looked bad in either mode)
  * Too high of a reliance on frontmatter and manual style hacks to display the right information

I also had a rather verbose dossier page, and some other static site content (like Promethease exports) that were relatively sensitive and not useful to most people.

The site was deployed using GitHub Pages using the [[https://github.com/qqhann/hugo-primer|Hugo Primer]] theme. It also had a rube goldberg system for publishing updates using a secret SSH key that had write access to my GitHub account to push things to GitHub Actions.

Overall, it was kind of a mess to maintain and the benefits of removal started to outweigh the benefits of keeping it.
