A DNS provider. I used DNSimple solely for dynamic DNS updates via pfSense when I lived in the US. On February 2nd, 2025, I cancelled my account.
- DNSimple is a reasonably developer-centric DNS host that is easy to programmatically change (unlike others that I've worked with).
- DNSimple “has a free plan” that is $0.60 per month.
- If the billing on your account fails for any reason, they immediately stop answering DNS queries.
- The billing for my account failed approximately 2 times because they either migrated payment providers or failed to correctly setup a subscription, stopping all queries for my zones at least twice, maybe more. Because this is on the “Free” plan at $0.60/month, this actually rather funny.
- They automatically reset your password every 3 months, unless you turn on 2FA.
- They let you bypass the automatic password reset anyway, but they do threaten that they will remove the bypass button or reserve the right to not offer it in the future.
This is the only service I've used where I've felt like they sabotage you from every angle, despite offering a very good product. If you have a SaaS product and the subscription part doesn't work, and/or it angers your customers, why would they advocate for you? Usually services that offer generous free tiers are hoping you'll pick them at your job and eventually lead to an enterprise contract, but my experience was so bad that I'm genuinely shocked at how bad it was.
