This is an old revision of the document!

Monica (HQ? Chandler?)

Monica (MonicaHQ?) is a personal relationship manager (PRM) (think CRM but for personal life) that claims to solve several things with managing interpersonal relationships for introverts and general people. It's open-source. Apparently, about 1400 people are paying something like $9/month or $90/year for their “paid service”, which really seems to be a patreon-style development funnel. Similarly, there are maybe 60 patreon members?

It's a PHP web app, and it can be self-hosted. However, self-hosting requires at-minimum a database and some way to send mail if you want full functionality, which seems non-ideal.

The biggest issue with the project, as of my evaluation on April 13th 2025 is that it has diverged into two codebases. The v4/stable codebase hasn't been updated in years. The current in-development branch is “v5”. There is general confusion about which version to use. There is a hosted stable version and a hosted version on a beta subdomain, which, when sending emails, identifies itself as monica-staging.

I'm not sure what's going on with this project, but I guess I don't recommend it, nor do I plan to use it, despite how nice of an idea it seems. For example, it has decedent relationship management, so you can define people's kids (e.g., your friend's kids, spouse, etc) and then have notes about them. It has gift management (though, not in Chandler), which is a really neat concept.

Generally, I feel a lot of confusion with this app/service.

See issue #6626 also.
